Help shape a fairer, healthier future in Lambeth and Southwark

21 January 2026

Become a Board Observer

Guy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation is inviting people in Lambeth and Southwark to apply for a voluntary role that brings lived experience into the heart of our decision making.

Applications are open for our next Board Observer. It is a part time, voluntary position for people who care about health inequity and know these boroughs well.

The Board Observer sits alongside our Trustees in Board meetings and contributes views drawn from personal experience rather than a corporate background. We are keen to hear from people who have lived through the social conditions that shape health, whether that means poor housing, unstable work, difficulties navigating the health system or the impact of pollution.

The role involves six Board meetings a year, an away day and joint events with Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. The role is unpaid, however the Foundation will cover expenses, including travel and childcare where needed, so people can take part fully.

Dr Danny Sriskandarajah, Trustee and Board DEI Lead, said the successful candidate may never have seen themselves in a governance role before.

We hope this opportunity will reach people who don’t usually put themselves forward for roles like this, but who have plenty to offer. From supporting children’s health to funding innovation in local hospitals, our programmes focus on making sure everyone has the same chance to live well. What matters most is sound judgement, personal integrity and the confidence to bring a community perspective to complex issues that affect people’s health.

Pamela Thomas held the position of Board Observer in 2025. She describes the experience as both empowering and eye opening.

From the first meeting, it was clear that my voice mattered. I could see how decisions were shaped and where my perspective made a real difference. It showed me that my voice and my experience is not only valid but can help others.

The Foundation’s work spans investment, research and community partnerships across Lambeth and Southwark.

Applications are open until Wednesday 11 February 2026.

Please note: Our aim is to appoint an independent candidate who can bring fresh perspective and objectivity to the role. To avoid any potential conflicts of interest, this opportunity is intended for individuals who are not senior members of partners the Foundation currently funds, or members of partners that are intending to apply to us for funding. We greatly value input to our work from our partner organisations and are grateful to them for taking up other avenues to share their perspectives and views with us.
