I know I speak on behalf of all of us when I say, we must stand up against this absolutely unacceptable racism, violence and all those who promote it. We have, however, been heartened to see the strength of communities across the country coming together to oppose this racism. We believe that by collectively being united in our purpose we can all build a healthy, diverse, vibrant and more equitable society.

“As Chair of the Board and on behalf of the Trustees at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation, I unreservedly condemn the current wave of racism that is taking place across our towns and cities, in the strongest possible terms.

These acts of violence are not protests, as some people claim, and have no place in our society. This is violence largely motivated by racism and Islamophobia, often perpetrated against asylum seekers, refugees and other communities who already experience marginalisation. Deliberate violence, intimidation and disorder is utterly abhorrent and wrong.

As an organisation, we know that race and income disproportionally impact the health of the communities in which we work. We have a duty to condemn the acts of violent groups, who are targeting diverse communities across the country, often aided by misinformation spread on social media, and to call them out. The emotional, as well as physical impact and stress such actions engender in diverse communities is damaging and deplorable. Violence and racism are in direct opposition to our values, our morals and our vision for a healthier society for all.

At the Foundation, we see the power of the diverse communities we work alongside, and how they bring about positive change, each and every day. Our focus is on the wellbeing and safety of our colleagues and partners, with whom we are in close contact, to ensure we are supporting them at this difficult time. We remain steadfast in our commitment and support for the NHS and our community partners across South London, who work tirelessly to provide better health outcomes for all of us. They should be supported and celebrated, not face discrimination, racism and violence.

I know I speak on behalf of all of us when I say, we must stand up against this absolutely unacceptable racism, violence and all those who promote it. We have, however, been heartened to see the strength of communities across the country coming together to oppose this racism. We believe that by collectively being united in our purpose we can all build a healthy, diverse, vibrant and more equitable society.”
